Wohnort's symbol for 'original-flavour' DAB

DAB+ tests have taken place on an experimental ensemble in Brighton. Generally, however, broadcasting in the UK uses "original-flavour" DAB transmitted in Band III. While it was proposed that some new multiplexes would use DAB+ for downloadable podcasts, it is likely to be some time before mainstream broadcasting is able to switch to DAB+, in spite of the cost savings for broadcasters that such a change could produce, because of the large number of original-flavour receivers already in use. The situation is made somewhat more entrenched by the refusal of certain receiver manufacturers to sell their UK models with their inherent DAB+ capabilities enabled (for reasons of licensing costs). This also has the result that a "UK specification" receiver will not work in an increasing number of other countries. The fact that test transmissions are now taking place demonstrates that nothing stays the same forever. Wohnort recommends, now more than ever, that you should consider buying a receiver that is DAB+ capable if you are likely to want to take it out of the country with you. Such a receiver should also be more future-proof than one which only receives DAB.

The operator of the national commercial ensemble in the UK, Digital One, has applied to the regulator for an extension of its licence area to include Northern Ireland. The multiplex is currently licensed to cover only Great Britain. Under Digital One's proposals, transmitters at Divis, Carnmoney Hill, Londonderry, Brougher Mountain, Strabane and Limavady would operate on Block 11D, the same frequency as England and Wales. Ofcom has launched a public consultation on the proposal, with a closing date of March 14th 2013.
