A Software update is available for the Noxon DAB+ USB stick from Terratec. According to the Noxon DAB Info website, the update 4.0.095 adds L-band reception and support for the EEC protection mode B. The latter concerns reception of MagicStar in Bavaria and certain other services. The Popup messages have been revised, and the update is described as bringing a performance improvement. Five new Services have popped up on the L-band ensemble in the Czech Republic, TELEKO DAB. Radio Vaticana+, RTL 102.5+, RTL Classic+, RTL Groove+ and RTL ItalianStyle+ are broadcasting in DAB+.

The Czech multiplex operator Teleko has brought an L-band transmitter into service for Northern Moravia and Silesia. Lysá Hora extends coverage of TELEKO DAB to a conurbation that includes Ostrava, Karvina, Havirov and Frýdek-Místek. Teleko estimates that about 30% of the Republic is now covered by their transmissions. A coverage map (11Mb!) of the new site is available for download.

Band III or L-band?
Wohnort recommends that you exercise caution if purchasing a DAB/DAB+ receiver in the Czech Republic. There are DAB/DAB+ receivers on sale that do not cover L-band. To date, L-band frequencies are the only ones that have been awarded or offered by the authorities to broadcasters. Band III is expected to become available for digital radio when analogue television ceases, but that is a couple of years away.

To date, regional L-band frequencies are the only ones that have been awarded or offered by the authorities to broadcasters. The analogue television service in Band III is gradually being switched off. By the end of 2011, only transmitters in Jesenik and Zlín should remain. In those regions, there is a deadline of June 30th 2012 for the last analogue TV transmissions to cease. Band III is expected to become available for digital radio after that.

In the long-term, the public service broadcaster Český Rozhlas would prefer to operate its own multiplex in Band III, but currently some of its services are being broadcast on the L-band ensemble.

Exercise caution when buying a DAB radio in the Czech Republic. A number of DAB receivers are on sale that receive only Band III. If you feel you must by a receiver now, it would be prudent to choose a receiver that will also receive L-band. Alternatively, if you are considering a receiver to use only in the Czech Republic, Wohnort suggests it might be worth waiting until the transmissions begin or appear to be imminent.
